This week, I have a remarkable find to share. I have talked before about buying back my childhood a little at a time. Things I fondly remember and am replacing them as I see them if it suits me. It usually suits me.

I have also done a few post on the significance of owls to me these days and did a post just recently about that.

Right after I had written that post, I stumbled across another treasure from my childhood and tried to win the bid on ebay. I lost the bid and was crushed I was not going to get it. But last week, my luck was with me and I was able to purchase this one......and low and behold, it was still in the original packaging. New, never used.

In the 70's, my mom must have ordered these for us and although I don't remember the packaging at all, I am thrilled to have it now! I found this light switch that I had as a kid in all of its original packaging. I had not thought about this in YEARS. It is funny how sometimes things come to mind that years ago were long forgotten.

I don't know what ever happened to my original owl, but I am guessing it must have been sold in a garage sale when I deemed myself too old for it and never thought for one minute I'd want it in my adult life.

The most unusual thing about this owl switch plate is the eyes glow in the dark. I tried and tried to get a photo, but it would not show up. The white circles glow in the dark, and this one still glows after all these years. I guess that is so you can see where the light is in the dark, but I distinctly remember thinking as a kid the owl was watching for "boogie men" in the dark.

I am over the moon to have found this and to have found it in original condition. It was waiting no doubt, for the right home and for me to find it! This is going up in my home soon, and I am most likely going to put it in my laundry room.

I tell ya, I have lots of treasures from my adult life, but slowly but surely I am buying back my childhood one treasure at a time!

Happy Vintage Thingie Thursday!!

Baby Quilt Finish - It's the little things!

I have been busy working on several quilts the last few weeks and have several finishes and a couple of almost finishes. This one is one I can share with you now, but more will be coming in a few weeks.

One of my co-workers had a baby the first of this month and I wanted to make him and his wife a baby quilt. I quizzed him for several weeks on what colors they used for the nursery, as to baby gender and every thing in between. He was totally clueless as to where all of these conversations were going.

This is the top of the baby quilt I made for him and his wife. I ran out of  time to send it off to the long arm quilter, so I just straight line quilted it myself. It was far from perfect and this was the first time I pre-washed the quilt before giving it to the couple. It dried up all soft and crinkly, and helped hide the imperfections but most of all they loved their quilt.

This is the back, my husband said he liked the back better than the front, I just laughed, as I totally expected him to say that! The picture below is the basting and using these neat plastic thingies on the end of straight pins. I ran out and still had to use safety pins to baste the quilt together.

My place of employment never does anything in regards to employee relations and I asked if I could do something for him after he came back from the birth of his son. I got the approval, and took up a collection from the other employees and put a little something together for him and he was totally surprised. I made a three layer diaper cake that included a gift card from everyone along with cute little baby things as decorations. We served muffins, donuts, cinnamon pretzels, cupcakes and we had a fruit tray. Baby boy napkins and the gifts served as the decorations. It was well received and he was really surprised and appreciated everything we did.

Everyone who knows how I do things would not believe how scaled down this event was, but it was not my choice, I knew if I over did things, (the way I would have wanted to do) it very well could have been the last special anything I would be allowed to do at work. It was most difficult to do it on a low level!

However, his expression and gratitude made me feel that I had done the right thing in organizing this to mark such a special occasion. His words spoke volumes to me, he said, "When someone does something for you and you absolutely expected nothing, it means the world and touches your heart so much."

So for my finishes for 2013, I can add this not so perfect baby quilt, which was perfectly loved and appreciated so very much. It is the little things that have the most impact!

*** I am sorry the link is late today for Vintage Thingie Thursday! The storms in Texas last night kept me off the computer!

This week, I have a vintage print my husband purchased for me a few years ago off of Ebay. It is framed and in my computer room. I had originally thought to take it to our cabin, but decided it should stay in my bear room.

I liked the frame at the time I received it, but think I may re-frame this print into a more simpler frame and matting. It really is a beautiful print, and I think it needs a more vintage looking frame.

Have a great Vintage thingie Thursday!!

Vintage Sewing Machine Find - Blue Love!

A quick stop at a local thrift store was a sheer stroke of luck if I do say so myself. I had looked around and did not find anything that caught my eye until I turned to leave. There on a lower shelf was a closed case with a pink tag that said vintage machine....$15.00.

Now, I started to just keep on walking out the door, but I happen to know that this particular thrift store does not sell anything that does not work, so I knew it must at least turn on. When I opened the case....this is what I saw.... Oh. Be. Still. My Heart. She is a beauty!

A quick couple of head turns to the right and then the left to insure no one had seen the treasure I had just unearthed, I walked, no practically ran to the counter with my $15.00.

Once I got this jewel home, I was totally gushing when I plugged her in and stepped on the foot pedal. She purrs like a newborn kitten. So magnificently strong, yet quiet as can be. I can not wait to find the manual online, as it did not come with one and I can not wait to see how she actually sews. The parts all move with such precision and ease it is hard to believe this one has been sitting for very long. The case did not even have a musty smell, and that is one thing that I can't stand, is that musty smell. This machine has none of that....she has absolutely made my heart sing today!!

I can't help but be ecstatic about this find!! I'd have to say the bargain of the month for sure! I'd also like to clarify I am not collecting sewing machines. Nope, I am not.

She needs a name....do I hear any suggestions??

This is one of two botanical prints I picked up a few months ago. This one is in my front bathroom, and I have not decided if it will stay there or moved somewhere else to hang with its match.

They were too good of a find at Goodwill to leave behind. The wooden frames are very ornate and in perfect condition.

Happy Vintage Thingie Thursday!!

All The Colors Of The Rainbow

I can do some of the most dumbest things you have ever seen. The problem is, I have no idea how I continue to do the same dumb things over and over again. But. I. Do.

Last Sunday I needed to take something back that I could not use that I had purchased at a store, then wanted to stop at Joann's Fabrics to pick up some quilting batting as I had a baby quilt I wanted to get started with the quilting later in the afternoon. As usual, I was in a hurry. I had successfully returned what I needed to return, but that was the end of my errands.

The above picture is the drivers doors of my car. Nothing looks amiss here at all. Now, the photo below, shows the drivers door open.

Do you happen to notice where the door handle is and the top of the door?? See how it sticks out farther than the door? Well, when you are in a hurry and trying to get things done so you can accomplish what you need to do.....dumb things happen.

That part of the door at the top, that sticks out over the door handle met my head. Yes, I opened the door and slammed my own self in the head. A goose egg popped up, I saw stars and knew my errand running was over. I debated on how I was even going to drive home.

Well, now my eye is every color of the rainbow. In all my 51 years, I have never had a black eye. Ever. And to think, I did this to myself, and rather successfully. It has been a week and it is still the same. Sorta gives me an idea of permanent eye makeup, only thing lacking is the other eye and I'd be set.

Oh, and did I mention, I have hit myself in the head before, just like this, just not as hard to cause all this damage. Some days, I think I should stay in a padded room. I am my own worse enemy!

Lesson here....car doors are weapons of personal destruction!

I found the picture below while looking through some folders on my computer. I have no idea when I saved it or where I found it from.

Are these not the cutest things?? I'd love to have some of these in my house, somewhere. I just love them.

Maybe this little cute bluebird cup and saucer would make a cute lamp.

But I think I'd have to go with some of my rose cups and saucers, and maybe even a sugar bowl or gravy boat. The ideas or endless!!

Happy Vintage Thingie Thursday!
