Vintage Thingies Thursday: Roosters & Chickens

It's another installment of Vintage Thingies Thursdays hosted by Confessions of an Apron Queen. If you have not checked it out on Lisa's blog, please do so. It's great fun.

This week: Something to crow about!!

This week I have a couple of favorites of mine. The first one is a magnificent rooster that watches over my kitchen. This wonderful creation was done by my Aunt LaVoice. She made this years ago, she made one for herself and one for her sister Joyce. This is the rooster that was in my Aunt LaVoice's kitchen for years. I can remember being a little girl and walking into my aunt's kitchen, this rooster was the first thing I always saw. He hung over her kitchen table and I always was intrigued by it.

I loved the colors, the craftsmanship and the way this picture came together with beans, popcorn, and seeds. Just look at the detail. Pure talent at its best to create something so full of character.

Of all my prized possessions, this picture is high on my list. When I look at this masterpiece, I can almost smell fish frying, and fresh tomatoes sliced ready to eat when I see this picture. Oh, and I can not forget the homemade french fries. Man, I loved those homemade fries my aunt made. You see, they were not the frozen packaged fries, these were homemade, and special. Yummy.
Funny, how that is what I remember when I think about eating at my aunt's house. My Uncle Noah frying mouth watering fish and those fresh tomatoes from my aunt's little tomato garden she had in her backyard. Oh, and the fries. Now my Uncle Noah was a talented man, and there was not anything that he could not fix or repair. But nothing could top his fish frying. I always thought my Uncle Noah could fry the best darn fish in this city. Believe me when I say the meals we had at my aunt's house, although they were not frequent, they were special.

Now these are a favorite of mine as well. You see, my Aunt Joyce is the chicken queen in our family. She has a set similar this which sets on her hutch in her kitchen. I found these one day several years ago in a local antique mall and they reminded me of the set my sweet aunt has.
I had to have them. You see, they just go with my rooster picture. I always have had a fondness for chickens, they remind me of the country and a simple life. These two chicken items also remind me of two dear ladies in my life and the childhood memories I have of each one of them.
And that my friends is the very thing that turns ordinary items into family treasures.

  1. I think this is my favorite VTT post so far. I collect roosters and chickens too.. and I love the one made from grains. I wish I could see it in person. Aunt Joyce and Aunt LaVoice. So precious. Were they sisters?

  2. The rooster is amazing! Very nice. I also like the rooster/chicken set. My grandma had chickens in her kitchen, then my mom, and now I do, too!

  4. I just about fell out of my chair. I had an aunt with a very similar rooster picture! Maybe it was from a pattern in a magazine or something. I used to love looking at it. I haven't thought of that in years. Yours is in really good shape, I remember hers had some broken sunflower shells.

    Amazing.

  7. Eileen, yes they are sisters, and you would love them. My mom is the third sister, but she does not share the love of chickens! Hey, if you are ever in our area, you are welcome to come by for lunch. This rooster looks so much better in person!
Threeundertwo, yes it came from a pattern. Somewhere I have the pattern for the Rooster and the Chicken. I had forgot that until you mentioned the pattern. I think my mom gave me the pattern, why she had it I don't even know. I will have to look for that.
Jamie, it was my aunt Lavoice with the patience, not Joyce....but that is ok. They won't mind.
Thanks for all the lovely comments today. I am glad so many enjoyed the post.

  10. What wonderful memories and how special are the rooster and chickens. I can see how you were fascinated as a girl. It certainly is a fascinating picture. I can almost taste the fried fish and fresh tomatoes. That's about as good as it gets with food for me.

  11. Oh i love it! My mom had the kitchen board that had a sampling of noodles and beans on it with the names of them underneath. This rooster reminds me of it! It brought good memories back! Thanks for a trip down memory lane!

  13. This was a very time consuming job that required a lot patience back in the early 60's. Each bean, etc. was put on one at a time. It was to have been a set of a hen and rooster. After the rooster, the hen never developed. Thanks Colorado lady for the nice tribute to me and my late husband.

  16. You're right, it's the memories and stories that turn ordinary, and sometimes strange, things into cherished collectibles.
I do some crewel work myself, and I am so impressed with that rooster! How have the beans and seeds stayed on so long and not dried up?

  19. I love this post. I'm a sucker for stories about things with sentimental value. And I love the crafty rooster picture made with all natural things. So unique!
The two chickens are cute too.
One more thing...you made me hungry. Fried fish and french fries sound good right about now.

  21. I lvoe that bean rooster. I can't figure out what some of the items are. Is the gold color, corn? I just might have to try this on a smaller scale. I collected roosters back when I had my vintage kitchen. Katrina took care of that. But I still love them.

  22. Wow! I finally made it over here & I'm so glad I did. I could never ever have the patience to create that chicken! What talent & patience.

My favorite part of Thurdays is to see the memories that everyone recalls about my shared item. And then to recall my own childhood with the things that others share. It's turned out to be a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing

  26. I had two aunts, Peggy Joyce and Loyce who made roosters out of seeds. I have been searching everywhere for instructions to make my own. I've collected chicken decor for twenty years now. Where would you get the pattern? Thanks for your story!

  27. I would love to have the Rooster Bean Mosaic pattern. My mother had one that unfortunately was tossed away when she passed. Such a waste. I would love to duplicate it for my home.

  29. I too, remember growing up with this exact picture in my home. My mom made it. It was always an interesting conversation piece. I remember where it was hung in every home we lived in. We were military so it saw a few different places. The picture was eventually passed down to my sister. I'd love to make this!

Sometimes someone says something really small, and it's like it fits into this empty space in your heart!

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your thoughts here, they really mean a lot to me!
