From Goodwill to Good Deal - End Table Transformation

In April of this year, I found this end table at our local Goodwill. It was sturdy and I could see potential for this to be turned into something better. The price was right too...a real bargain at $5.00. So I brought it home and stored it in the garage.
When my daughter made the decision to move to Austin, I knew she was going to need furniture, so I remembered this end table and knew it was going to have a new home. This is the picture of it after I started sanding on it...I FORGOT to take a before photo as I was excited to get to work on it. The top is wood and in our hast to sand all the old finish off the top, well we sanded a bit too much......more on that later.

Once the piece was sanded and wiped free of the dust, I primed this with two coats of primer.

Then 3 coats of paint. On this project, I used spray paint and it worked just fine. Now remember I told you we sanded a bit too much on the top, well...I thought once we painted it the imperfections would go away. That was not the case and I could not stand how the top looked. I almost decided to trash this project due to the way the top of the table looked, but I was having a hard time with that.

How did I fix this problem? Well, I will tell you. I sent my daughter to the scrap book store and she selected 4 sheets of scrapbook paper for the top. I had some Mod Podge Hard Coat that works well on furniture and we used that. We adhered the paper to the top of the table and gave it 4 or 5 coats of Mod Podge. Let me tell you, this stuff dries hard and works great on furniture, you just have to buy the right product for the project youa re working on.

Here is the details of the paper. This turned out perfectly and hid all the imperfections that we caused when over sanding the top. And I might add, this was a cheap fix for the problem too. I think the paper cost under $1.50 and I already had the Mod Podge. In using the Mod Podge Hard Coat that is for furniture, it dries hard and will hold up well for the table.

And here is the table in my daughters apartment. Notice the top, it almost looks like a slate tile top but it is not. I love how this turned out and I have to say, not bad for about $7.00. The other supplies I already had on hand so this indeed was a thrifty project that turned out great....except for the little mishap we had, but with a little imagination, that was a easy fix.

  4. I have a tendency to want to throw in the towel when things don't go as planned. (I am working to overcome it and just breathe deeply and take one step at a time and it's working!)

    It looks F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S!!

  5. Maureen...me too....but this time, I did not want to look for another table...so I had to figure out how to make this one work! I was so glad I did too, I like it better than plain.

  6. I am a single mother, with a very limited income. What an inspiration you are. I have such ugly old furniture and ironically a box of black spray paint in the shed. If you don't mind I am going to email you on how exactly you did this. I have never been so super excited since my ex husband left 5 years ago. We have been living with the ugliest furniture and no money to buy now or updated used, and I have a little faith I can change that now. (not saying your table was ugly) but - it truly is amazing NOW!

I always visit, but never say what an inspiration you are. I have to ask, are there other project you have done like this? Was it hard? Look for an email!

  8. I agree with Kelli, and I need to get some paint and sand paper. This is adorable and the top just adds to the charm of this piece. I think a solid black top would have not been as nice. Love it!

  13. You take the cake when it comes to transforming things. That is amazing what you did with that table. Just goes to show when you get two head together what comes out. Great job and it looks very nice in her apartment. I know you are still tried, but glad you are getting back into the blogging swing again.

  15. How I long sometimes to be crafty!! I have not an artistic gene in my makeup, and no aptitude for anything constructed, sewn, knit, crocheted, or stitched in any fashion.

This just makes me want to start SANDING something!

  18. OMGosh, Suzanne, this is AWESOME. I had never thought of doing this...but I have a little table that is going to get the same treatment. It isn't messed up on top but I have an idea, thanks to you, to make it an adorable table...

Yes, my husband and I would love to just tell the fella that tore things up around our place that we would just pay for it all...but, in my heart, I know HE needs to assume responsibility..and he seems willing. Bless his heart...he is in his second year of college. Studying to be an engineer. He seems to be a good boy..just away from home for the first time, drank way too much and went beserk.
No, we aren't really close to the university but he and 4 other boys rented a house on the block behind our house. He got drunk and rowdy and his roommates told him to get the heck out of the house. I guess he just started wandering around and ended up at our house.

Sometimes someone says something really small, and it's like it fits into this empty space in your heart!

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your thoughts here, they really mean a lot to me!
