If I can say one thing about myself lately, it would be I guess that I am on a crafting roll. I go months on end and never create a thing, but lately, I have really been having a grand time. Not only in the crafting department, but I have just about driven my husband nuts by not telling him what he wants to know..... What does he want to know? Well, It has something to do with these...........
....this set of cute little birdies. Look how cute the look sitting on my shelf in the bathroom.....but not too long ago, they were not so cute. Take a look.
These are really expensive and quality decorative birds!! ~Not! They came from the Dollar Store. I am thinking the bright cheesy colors were a dead giveaway the moment you saw them. I purchased about 14 of these little beauties and took them home. Then I grabbed my trusty can of this.......
Valspar Spray paint from Lowe's. Satin Finish. Porcelain is the color. I started giving these little birds a makeover they were chirping to have. Steve came home and saw all of these birds in the driveway drying and asked what in the world I was going to do with these birds. He has asked me that about a hundred times. I just smile and say..."Oh don't worry about it." He is worried about it. I think he thinks I am going to plaster them all over the yard. My son said they looked much better before I painted them......hardly.....men!
My set is in the bathroom, but I may end up moving them later on into a bedroom I am going to repaint. No matter where I move them, I just love the look after they had their little makeover.
These brown birds were in Ballard Design catalog a few months back. The set was $25.00. Great for inspiration, but not so great to purchase when you are looking for a bargain like I tend to do. I think my little set is a good copy of these over priced little guys.
What do you think? Do you prefer the dollar store birds in their original state or after I put my paint can to work?
Not bad for $2.00 and a little work. I like them. I have about six sets of these that will be flying off to different destinations in a few days....one set all the way to the Netherlands. I hope they like their new homes. And one thing is for sure, my husband will be able to rest easy knowing they will not be sitting all over my patio and lawn. I think I will tell him it is his Father's Day gift!

I love them painted. My grandmother had a set like the brown ones on her mantle for years, I loved them as a child. I wish I knew where they went, but the porcelain color painted ones are just as lovely. Good crafting!
ReplyDeleteHow clever! I got a couple of these from the Dollar Store, but I never thought about repainting them, I just set them in flower pots tucked under plants...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure your DH is wondering what's going on...
Molly
I love them painted...looks so much better girl..and WOW!! $25.00 for Ballard ones...way too much for this thrifty lady...thanks for sharing Gl♥ria
ReplyDeleteMUCH better! Spray paint is my friend when it comes to decorations as well! So many cute objects are just hiding under garish paint jobs, with a little help they are adorable!
ReplyDeleteI really like them painted white. Good vision.
ReplyDeleteI love the thrifty little birds, after their makeover, of course!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good idea. I think I will do the same with a couple that I have.

I always thought you were a little coo coo, now I know for sure. I have felt sorry for Steve a long time. Give him a break! However, these would have been good for Blue Monday.
ReplyDeleteThe painted ones are much more interesting!
ReplyDeleteI actually like them both ways. I think they will have great adventures in their new white suits as they travel in pairs all over the world!!!
ReplyDeleteI love them in white!
ReplyDeleteGoodness, it never occurred to me to paint things like that...do I live under a rock or something?
I love the make-over your birdies got. I feel so silly not ever thinking of repainting the countless knick-knacks that have passed through our house - what an inspiration!
ReplyDeleteOh, gosh..those look fabulous.
ReplyDeleteYou are such a tease...bet your hubby would fall over if you said, Here, honey...happy Father's Day, and gave him ALL of the birds !! haha
gotta love spray paint!!! I know I do...they look great!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Fathers Day gift idea!
ReplyDeleteI like them painted by you, I think you're right; they look so much nicer.
I never thought to do such a thing, I never looked at their potential in the Dollar Store. Now I will!
Suzanne,I totally love your "cheap chic"... chic makeover! I think you are one clever little birdie for the makeover...AND...lol...men know nothing about true style! I love spray paint....paint on Sista!
ReplyDeleteThese are SO cute! Someday I will live in a place where it is convenient to use spraypaint. The possibilities are endless *L*
ReplyDeleteI like the spray painted ones the best - never would have thought to do that - very clever of you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good eye you have, to see beyond the exterior and know you can transform your finds into something you will really love! Good job!
ReplyDeleteThey look great!
ReplyDeleteBRILLIANT!!! Great thinking and inspiration--birds not torturing of DH although that is pretty ingenious too:D
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your little re-painted birdies!!! What do most men know?!
ReplyDeleteWhat a bargain and what a gift to receive. Yes, continue to paint them.... sue
I like them painted in white also. Especially when you can display them in front of a nice contrast wall so they would should up more. After seeing all the different things bloggers use spray paint on around here, I am thinking I need to start trying that.
ReplyDeleteI bet Steve worries every day what will be waiting when I get home !!!I like the birds both ways ---really cute.
ReplyDeleteDang! You are so smart! I would have just walked by those birdies in the store with a "ooh, yuck!"
