A favorite pastime for a dachshund is to stretch out and take a good long sun soaking nap on a summer afternoon. Sophie is the queen of wanting to go outside and lay on the back porch soaking up the afternoon sun. In fact, she lives for those afternoon naps.....most of the time.
Our summer has been one for the record books they tell us, and with the
record three digit heat wave we have had here, these soothing afternoon
naps in the sun have just about all but gone away. Dachshunds are smart
and they are no dummies....they no when enough heat is enough and know
to stay inside. Sophie these summer afternoons likes to stay wrapped in a blanket on the sofa enjoying the cool air conditioning.
Dachshunds are also head strong and stubborn, at least one of our three is very much that way. Dora does not want to give up a darn thing she loves and has refused to do so. Dora has problem solved the dilemma with the oppressive heat we have been having and so far it is working rather nicely in her favor.
So for this smarty pants little girl, Dora has discovered that sunbathing is a piece of cake when you let the bottom half of your tummy and tail soak up the sun, while the top half of your tummy and head enjoy the cool air from the ceiling fan.
Dora has this new method down to a science. She is very content to enjoy the heat and the cool air all at once.....thus giving up nothing she enjoys. When I found her this way two afternoons in a row, I had to laugh and wonder where in the world and how did she dream this up.....
All of a sudden she gave me a knowing look and a crazy thought popped into my head. It was almost as if she was reminding me of how I often sleep, sometimes with one leg out of the covers and one leg under the covers to equalize the temperature for better sleeping. It was almost like she was reminding me that she does pay attention and it might be a good thing for me to remember that. It was almost like she was saying if it works for you, then it works for me too.
Good grief....what do you do when you have a dog that is almost as smart as you are???? Or the very least, absolutely as inventive.....I'm not sure what to make of it, but I promise....it has become a new daily pastime around here for one of our dachshunds!

so cute! reminds me of our doxie-she stretches out like this on the cool tile floors :)
ReplyDeleteHey Suzanne!
ReplyDeleteNow I'm just grinning ear to ear and nodding my head over here....with all of the heat our dogs too are enjoying the AC in the house!! We've got them ALL inside now, and boy oh boy...
They are hysterical! I've never seen so many tails wagging and so many spots made for comfort!
Hope the heat goes away soon...it's sizzling all over and I don't like hot dogs!!!!
Blessings, Doni
Oh my. This is so cute! And you are right, it looks like she wants the best of both worlds. What would we do without our pets? Dora is so smart and cute!
ReplyDeleteSophie reminds me of our Abby. She was the same color as Dora - she would go outside in 110 degree temps, lay in the middle of the yard for a little while, flop over and warm the other and then come in to cool off. Her black fur would be almost too hot to touch. Only one of our long haired dachshunds enjoys sitting in the sun or under the covers all the time. Our little long haired red head never gets under the covers during the day but most certainly sleeps under the covers at night. I think during the day she is afraid she might miss something or I just might change rooms on her and she wouldn't notice - lol! Thanks for sharing the darling photos of your babies :)
ReplyDeleteDear Colorado Lady, I am the girl who bought all of those vintage dishes from you. You are the one who inspired my bouquet. Thought you may want to head over to my blog and check out the few pictures I have of it! Thank you so much for the inspiration!
ReplyDeletePS i feel your dogs pain.... I wish it would cool off!
pup-ectly adorable!
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute post! I love your doggies and how smart they are. I do that also...well the leg out of the covers part! It has been a really hot summer and I must admit to be ready for some cooler temps NOW!
ReplyDeleteDora is smart just like her mommy. Our German shepard is to go to work with my husband, when it was hot she would splash out cool water from her bowl onto the concrete floor then lay in it. How do they figure it out?
ReplyDeletecute post!
Dora is hilarious!! I just love your Doxies!

ps- I probably shouldn't admit this in writing, but I'm 99.9% sure Milly and Shelby are both way smarter than I am. They amaze me sometimes with their smarts!
ReplyDeleteOh goodness how cute is she! Smart puppy!
ReplyDeleteLOL This post cracked me up. I too have a sun loving dog. When we turn the a/c on he runs outside. If he has to be inside he will hunker down under a blanket. The warmer the better for him. But, when it's to hot that the sidewalk burns him, he will stay inside and freeze :)
ReplyDeleteOur 3 Yorkies stretch out on our kitchen tile floor and pretty much stay there all day. They. Don't. Move. AT. ALL. I've tripped over them more than once. Can't say that I don't blame them though. The heat this summer is incredible!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! So cute. And so familiar. Our black lab is bred for snow and wilts instantaneously in the heat. He looks like he's gained 10 lbs. Since the summer scorch began.
ReplyDeleteThat is one smart little dog! I love how dachshunds are inventive!!
ReplyDeleteHi Suzanne,
ReplyDeleteOh what a cute post! I saw this on my sidebar, and I had to come and see what it was about. What a smart doggie! I wonder how he figured out how to get the curtain to cover him like that. Very clever! I had a dachshund when I was 9, and I remember trying to put doll clothes on him. He didn't like it either! lol Thanks for the giggle today!
Debbie
My doxies are all piled on the den sofa enjoying the air. They haven't wanted to be outside much this summer, it has been miserable here in the South. They are all getting fat!
ReplyDeleteIt has been said after a man and woman live together long enough they start looking alike. In this case, since you and your "children" have been together so long, you have started acting alike. Heaven forbid!
ReplyDeleteDora is a genius! Love her creative solution. Our Doxie mix's solution for the summer heat is - bound outside and lay down in the grass. Do not come in when Mom calls but wait until Mom gets settled then decide it's too hot and come in. Repeat this with going out, always waiting until Mom settles in to want to be on the other side of the door.
