Vintage Thanksgiving Postcard - dated 1925....lots of wear, but still a goodie!!

You maybe can enlarge to read the message, I love finding postcards that were written on and mailed. They are lots of fun to read.

One thing about looking through vintage cookbooks and recipes is you never know what kind of gem might be lurking there within the pages. This recipe I am going to share is just that...a gem! I love how it turned out and great for holiday dessert tables.

Yummo!! Does this upside down cranberry cake not look divine!!! Even if I do say so myself!! Glad it turned out, as sometimes the directions are a bit sketchy in old cookbooks. Recipe below!

CranberryUpside-Down Cake

Topping: 1/4 cup chopped walnuts, 1/4 cup butter, 1/2 cup light brown sugar, 1 cup white sugar, 2 cups frozen cranberries

To make topping, slice butter into thin pieces. place in bottom of round cake pan (8 inch). Sprinkle with walnuts over butter. Wash and dry cranberries, pour over nuts.

Cake: 1/2 cup almond paste (not marzipan), 3/4 cup sugar, 1/2 cup butter at room temperature, 1 1/4 cup flour, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1/4 tsp. salt, 3 eggs, 1 Tbl. orange zest.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. ( I used the paddle attachment on my stand mixer) beat almond paste in low speed for about 2 minutes or until broken up. Add sugar, increase speed and keep beating until almond paste is fine as possible. Add butter and mix until creamy and pale in coloring. (aprox 1 minute) Add eggs, one at a time scraping down sides. Add orange zest mix well. Sift flour, salt and baking powder. Turn off mixer and add dry ingredients in three batches mixing by hand. Don't over beat or mix. Pour in prepared pan over cranberry mixture, spread smooth, (this will be thick). Bake for about 40-50 minutes. Let rest for 10 to 12 minutes and turn out of pan onto serving plate. Cool and cover with glass dome.

I used my grandmothers vintage clear glass cake plate.....This is so pretty for Thanksgiving dessert or for Christmas

And because I am thankful for all of my blogging friends, all of you who show up here and always have something great to share or say..... I'd like to host a little giveaway...one that will continue to give all throughout 2012.I have not had a giveaway in a while, and thought it was high time to do so!!

  1. Suzanne,
I adore old post cards and collect them...and I agree 100% I love to read the back of them. I know they are worth more if not used, but to me they are more valuable with the written word on them.
May you and your family have a Happy Thanksgiving!

  5. Oh that does look yummy! And I agree, your grandmother's glass plate adds to the elegance!

I always look most forward to our party, UNO and the Fabulous Dessert Bar. My close friends from Michigan visit and we have dinner out, then endless sweets, most which I bake as well as a huge assortment of everyone's favorite holiday candies while we play UNO for a few hours. Funny thing, I couldn't tell you who's won in any of the years we've played!

  11. What am I looking forward to? Actually, having some cranberry sauce :) I am on Warfarin (blood thinner medication) and one has to really restrict the amount of cranberry products one consumes - but a little bit once in a great while is o.k. So besides being with my family, I want my cranberry sauce! lol :)

  13. Wow, your dessert looks so pretty! I've been thinking about how I should get into my Grammy's old cookbooks and make some of that stuff. Maybe I will! :)

Thanks for the opportunity for the giveaway! I think the thing I am most looking forward to this holiday season is...hmmmm... Ok, this is going to sound funny but I'm in a rut and I need to snap out of it! (I just realized that as I was trying to think of something to write here... I WANT TO BE EXCITED!!! :) Ok, so the thing I am most looking forward to is getting out my Christmas decorations so I can find my Bath and Body Works oil warmer so I can use my 3 bottles of holiday scents. Isn't that pathetic???!!! I need to perk up a little bit, don't I? Ha!

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  22. I am looking forward to spending time with my family. Somehow we make it a priority to spend lots of time together just hanging out (or crafting). Thanks for the chance to get this magazine. I used to sell Souther Living at Home so I received the magazine then, but quit getting it a few years ago. I miss it and would enjoy getting it again.

    Thanks Suzanne!

  23. I always look forward to watching the grands open their presents, and the sheer delight of the anticipation of Santa coming.
This year we have an added little grand. My son has a 4 yr. old foster child that they may get to adopt. He gets sooooo excited over anything he does. Add him to another 4 yr. old and a 6 yr. old, and there is nothing but fun!

  28. I love that recipe and will certainly try it! Thanks for sharing...the older ones are better, huh? I love this time of the year because it is a time of tradition and family for me! My four sisters and I plan a gathering and all our children come in for the Holiday. We have so much fun and each year put on a talent show for my 82 year old mom, who loves it all! She even help with the cooking...a feast! This is the happiest of time for our entire family! All The Best...Hugs!

  29. I am doing this a right at the end of Saturday for all on the east coast...it's about 11 pm there (9 pm for me!) but I would like to be enetered in the contest! I am looking forward to getting to spend Christmas (and I just got to spend Thanksgiving) with our daughter, son-in-law and grandson for the first time in several years. We had missed them SO MUCH! Family is to most important part of the Holidays, because, after Christ, they are the most important blessing God has given us! Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and that your Christmas also is truly blessed!

Sometimes someone says something really small, and it's like it fits into this empty space in your heart!

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your thoughts here, they really mean a lot to me!
