This week, I have a whole stack of vintage postcards in the first picture. However, really they are not the main focus of this post.
One Saturday not long ago my husband and I were on our way home from eating lunch out. I spotted an "Estate Sale" sign and made my husband pull over so I could go in. It must have been the last day because everything was 75% off....now granted there was not much there that I was interested in, but I did spot a box of vintage postcards and started looking through the box.
The lady running the sale asked me if I collected vintage postcards. I sorta chuckled and told her no, I did not but was just looking through the box. She said well, these were originally four for a dollar, but you can have the whole box for five dollars. I thought to myself for five dollars, I could look through them at home a whole lot easier. So I purchased these postcards because I really don't collect them...but was looking for a certain type for a project I have in mind to do later on this year.
When we got home, my husband went to take a nap and I sat at the kitchen table sorting through the cards. I was pleased that about half of the cards were exactly what I was looking for and when I had just about gotten to the bottom of the box, I pulled this one out and just stared!
I promise you, things FIND ME and come to the right home more times than not. This was a postcard of a restaurant in Childress, Texas. We used to always leave very early in the morning when we were headed to Colorado on vacation when the kids were small. For us vacation started around 3:30 am and we would be pulling into Childress around breakfast time and always ate breakfast at this place. Always. Without fail.
I took a picture and posted on Facebook and asked the question who was going to be the first person to tell me where this was....my daughter got it right off....said she would never forget that place...they put ice in her milk. And if my memory serves me correctly, it was a mighty big deal and sent her into a fit of tears. My daughter was very particular about her food and drinks when she was small....and if things were not as she thought they should be..well....you'd better make it right and real quick!!
The place closed several years ago, but we always drive past it with fond melancholy memories and wish it was still open...it was tradition for my family after all.
I goggled the name of this restaurant when I started this post and discovered that this restaurant has reopened and is getting rave reviews. I was thrilled to know that our old breakfast stop will be there waiting to dish out some new memories on our way to Colorado this year.
And seriously? Who would have ever thought this card would mean anything to anyone...other than me and my husband!! I am going to frame it!! Notice the last line of the note on the card, it reads, "I'm headin to the mountains!" Yes, I am sure that is why it was still there on the last day of the estate sale...it was waiting on me to find it!! Love how that happens!!
Suzanne! I am glad you are safe! This is a sweet story. It was so cool for you to find that postcard. Funny how these little things come along. I think this is a wonderful story! Hugs and Blessings Anne
ReplyDeleteThat is an amazing story. i bet you can even remember what the inside of the restaurant looked like and where you sat. Truely Amazing.

Suzanne, WOW when I saw the post card I knew I had been there. Sure enough my family did the same thing as yours. I spent every 4th of July between 9-14 years old in Colorado. It was always a great time. The other thing is for 4 years we lived 30 miles south of Childress and we even ate there then. This is a small world. I think you hit the jack pot.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful, so nice you found it and the story had a happy ending too! I love to find in a post card box and draw I have, such old and great post cards. They were so special, I miss them! Thank you for hosting and have a wonderful EASTER SUNDAY!

I would have grabbed the box of postcards, too! How awesome is it that you found a treasured memory from your past?!
ReplyDeleteStories like this make chills come! Just like you say, this meant so much to you, this restaurant. We use to do the same thing when I was a kid, leave early AM for vacations and stop at our special place for breakfast. Then I did it with my family. I really enjoyed your postcard story.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter,
Emily
I love old postcards! You're right - that one did find you. How odd that in that big box of postcards, you would find one that held such sentiment.
ReplyDeleteI love your story about the restaurant. I have places like that in my childhood memories, too, and I'm so nostalgic about them. I love the retro look of the place, too--cool that someone has reopened it!

I used to sell postcards on EBay, so many people wrote about their memories when they found that special card from their past - those kinds of postcards are pretty special!

ReplyDeleteIt's fun to read old postcards!! Thanks for hosting the party each week!!!
ReplyDeleteIt was meant to be...what a neat story, Suzanne. If I remember right, there use to be a chain of Ranch House Resturants in Texas. The building sure looks like some I've been in, too. Glad you enjoyed the 1940's guilt. Gosh, I have bunches...will show some more later. I have the Crews quilt loaded on the machine. Thought I'd do it first. Will start the quilting in the AM...should be done by noon and then will put on the binding. Hope to have them both ready to mail on Monday. Will keep you posted....Sue
ReplyDeletePS....ooops I know you have no 'guilt' goin' on about the 1940's QUILT! LOL...I really kan tipe!
ReplyDeletethank you for hosting!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your postcard post! I've never been to Childress, Texas, but was very taken by your description of your treks to Colorado. When I was a child--in the '60s--we struck out from Colorado every summer (from Nebraska) at about the same time. But, back then, it was to avoid the heat, as we had no air conditioning in the car. Travel across northern Kansas and eastern Colorado could be brutal in the daytime with no AC! My sister and I slept on a mattress in the back of our station wagon. Couldn't do that nowadays, could we?
