Vintage Thingie Thursday: Vintage Salt and Pepper Shakers

Welcome everyone to Vintage Thingies Thursday. If you have a love for vintage things, well....you have come to the right place. We have a "dog-gone" good time each and every week!!!
If you are new to this party, please take the time to
read and follow the instructions for participating in Vintage Thingies Thursday, click HERE. I try and keep things fairly simple, so  please make sure you follow the instructions. Please only ONE link per week. Lastly, if you link in, LINK back to my blog, so everyone can see all of the vintage goodies being showed that day. If you don't link back here, they won't know who to visit......thanks so much.

Before the holidays, I was given the opportunity to acquire some things that belonged to my Auntie, (my dad's sister) and my grandmother. The last relative living is my Auntie's husband, and he has had to go to a nursing home, thus my cousin is selling the house and told me to come get some of the things I wanted.

It was a very hard day for me, harder than I can even put into words. But I came home with a truck and trailer full of things that belonged to my grandmother and aunt and even my uncle's mother. A truck and trailer full of memories. Most things are still as I brought them home, it will take me a while to decide what to do with them and how to keep them.

This is a set of salt and peppers my aunt had on her Hoosier cabinet. I am inclined to think these are reproduction pieces, but I think they are cute and reminded me of my auntie's taste so I brought them home, saving them from being tossed in a hole in the ground and covered up, as my cousin put it. Shiver!

Now, this is a vintage salt and pepper shaker. One LONE shaker, no match. I loved this piece, and some reason, in the back of my memory, somewhere, I seem to remember seeing this on a shelf in the kitchen of my uncle's mothers house. It does not bother me one bit that it is only one, I tend to rescue lone shakers and bring them home with me.

See, it fits rather nicely with my other single shakers.

Have a great Vintage Thingie Thursday! This is the first of the 2011 vintage goodies to share and I am looking forward to another great year. Now that the holidays are over, I will have more time to visit and leave comments. I will do better!! Have a great week everyone!!!

  2. Nice to see some of the things you were able to bring home. I really like the little pink S&P set. Having one is okay. Some people do not use salt, so you would only need one for the pepper.

  3. Salt n peppers are so interesting. And there is no end to the combos of them, always fun to collect. Hope you have had a nice New Year!

  5. Suzanne,
It is always hard to see your loved one's things after they have passed and having to leave things behind. I am glad you got to take some things for yourself. I do love your shakers. I know you will treasure them. Thanks for hosting another year of VTT!

  11. I bet that was hard to do Suzanne. I just found out this week my last living relative, my dad's sister, 91, just went to a nursing home. Her mind is clear as a bell but she is very weak and frail. You have some great pieces there.

  12. Hauling away a handful or a truckload of memories is always bittersweet. But as you take them out, hold them in your hands, find them homes around YOUR home---the sweet wins out, and it's lovely to have them.

And I KNEW I'd just seen that little lone shaker!! It can be had, along with the matching teapot:

Isn't that funny---you post something that's been seen recently.

  15. What a blessing to be able to acquire the things that your auntie and grandmother cherished. When my grandmother sold her home the family was allowed to come in and choose a few things they would like to have. I lived in Germany at the time so only received a few items my sister set aside for me.

  20. I've been cleaning out a much needed space and came upon a pair of shakers I'd put away. You've inspired me to get 'em out and give them the spotlight again.

I linked up to the party. Happy Thurs!

  25. Thanks for dropping by. I plan to link to next weeks party too! I know you long for Colorado, but wasn't that 62 degree day we had today kinda nice? It worked for me. Honey (in Garland).

  26. I'm so glad you were able to save some of their treasures to love-I know they would like it. It's a really hard time I know-my grandma recently went in a nursing home(age 87)for several weeks and got home a couple of weeks before Christmas. We're hoping that she won't have to go back. She's been giving us things for several years-that's what I'm going to try to do when I get older because I have no children. You got some lovely items!

  27. Happy New Year! Haven't been by in a while but do still follow. Love the salt & pepper shakers. Thanks for rescuing them. I wish I had rescued more of my grandmother's before they 'buried' them.

  28. I'm sure you will put all your new "old" treasures to good use, Suzanne! I'm sure these pieces are filled with memories for you.

I'm so sad that I've missed your parties recently. Maybe I'll make it again next week. ;)

    Blessings and Happy New Year!

  29. I love the salt and pepper shaker guys with the silver lids. I so much more enjoy old things than new. Anybody can go and buy new stuff, I'd rather 'find' things!

  30. It's great that your cousin shared the "memories" with you instead of just selling everything ... that happens alot of times ... so I'm glad for you that you were able to get some of the things that are precious to you! I like the idea of collecting the lone salt and pepper shakers ... I just might have to start a collection of them myself! Have a lovely weekend!

  31. I have a teapot, sugar, and creamer just like your shaker of the black pig with the pink face. My mother gave it to me many years ago. She told me she new it was at least 55 years old. I love it! So sorry to hear about your loss.

  32. I can imagine the pain of cleaning out a loved one's home. It is tough.

I love that you have some momentos and wonderful memories surrounding them.

Sometimes someone says something really small, and it's like it fits into this empty space in your heart!

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your thoughts here, they really mean a lot to me!
