For The Over 30 Crowd!!

THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!!
If you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious!!!!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking Twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... barefoot... BOTH ways Yadda, yadda, yadda......

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it! But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today.

You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a Utopia!
And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen!
Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take, like, a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents!

Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to tan our hide! Nowhere was safe!

There were no MP3' s or Napsters! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the local record store and shoplift it yourself!

Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and mess it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished and the tape would come undone. Cause - that's how we rolled, dig?

There was no such things as cell phones. Nothing was so important that it could not wait until you got home to make a actual telephone call. Speaking of telephones, we didn't have fancy technology like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it!
And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either!
When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your coach, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony PlayStation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen... forever!
And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! There was no channel surfing! You had to get off your tail and walk over to the TV to change the channel! NO REMOTES!!!

There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little brats!

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove! Imagine that!

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980 or before!

Regards,
The Over 30 Crowd

~~~I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. A friend of mine sent this to me in a email, I changed some of the wording so it would not offend anyone...still....I think it is funny and a good representation of how fast things have progressed in just a few short years.
  1. Eek! I remember all those things. Well, except Atari. We had Pong. That was it. Just one game of ping-pong that lasted for about 3 years. No winner, nobody died. Just pong. But, you could dial it up to make it faster! And, when was the last time you saw a card catalog. Around here, you have to use a computer or ask the librarian.
    I guess the good news is that it's gotten easier for us fogies, too. I wouldn't trade my MP3 or any of my dozen or so remotes. Lane
  2. I think life was great when I was a kid!!! Simple and fun!
    It's a little sad how the "kids" of today have no idea on how to entertain themselves.
    Guess I'm "history" !!!
  5. Sometimes I feel sorry for the kids of today being deprived of 'our lives'. But on the other hand technologically they are far more advanced than we would ever have thought imaginable. I think the biggest disservice for children today is the lack of discipline ... Great post. I've seen a couple others similar to this. Memories........ TTFN ~Marydon
  6. Oh, Suzanne!
    This was fun to read!
    And, ofcourse, it is nice to have all those old things behind telling the young people now, when they complaining about nothing to do...But it is also good with this new technique; for example I used to have many penpals all other the world, when I was yonger, and now you can find them on the net.
    Thanks for visiting my Blue Monday!/
  8. What a great post..I am going to make sure my girls see it!
    I really got a few giggles from it,and in 30 years (or less) someone may read back to find...lol...gosh they had it tough in 2009!
    With a new baby coming to our house and the experience of registering for a new baby I was amazed at all the "things" that are available for making Mommys life easier....but lol...you know what...I giggle that "cloth diapering is becoming all the rage again.. because it is better for baby...and the earth....
    showing me again...no matter where technoligy goes...perhaps it is the good old days and WAYS...that prevail...
    Oh man...life was so good...and simple!
  10. I'm only 40, and I can't believe the changes in my lifetime. You forgot no cordless phones! We only had 2 phones in our house, kitchen and my parents' room, so there was no phone privacy either!
  13. I'm so old we didn't even HAVE Atari when I was a kid - - - we didn't even have Intelevision. We had plain old board games like Clue and Sorry.
    Oh, and I also vividly remember having to TYPE term papers on a typerwriter and try to PLAN how much space to leave at the bottom of the page for footnotes!!!!
    We'll just gloss over the fact that the first house I ever lived in didn't have running water but DID have a nice little outhouse in the back yard.
  14. Right on, sister! I agree 100%. I look back on my childhood as magical. We were out the door after breakfast, we used our imaginations and had many adventures, and our parents had to drag us in at night, kicking and screaming! I've got a neighbor who has 6 kids, and you would never know it, because they're inside ALL day, playing Xbox. So sad. So Vitamin D deficient!
  15. When I was young we had no video games, just pinball with real balls. And the only music in the car came from a radio.
  17. Suzanne, what a coincidence, I received this same e-mail today! You did a good job making a post out of it!!! I'm older than dirt, and of course I remember the 'olden' days waaay back there. So many changes during my lifetime!
    Thanks for visiting my blog!
  18. Although I love technology, I wouldn't trade my memories of growing up in the 1950s for anything. It makes you wonder how many changes the children of today will witness. In 1969 during the moon landing, my grandmother said she was amazed at the changes she had seen since her birth in 1891. She saw it all from horse and buggy to landing on the moon.
    We have one of those green rotary phones in the garage, and my nephew likes to make calls on the 'antique phone'. The first time he used it he needed instructions. Ha!
  19. Great post! I remember all of these things. I also remember when they started making the phone cords longer so you can take the phone into another room or closet or something. And typing my term papers and counting the words if it had to be 500 words or something.
    Thanks for the memories.
Sometimes someone says something really small, and it's like it fits into this empty space in your heart!
Thank you for stopping by and leaving your thoughts here, they really mean a lot to me!
