The Thrill Of The Hunt

Winter is hard on Dachshunds...at least it is for my three...They love the warm weather, the cold...not so much. And for the most part, my two oldest ones really don't care for sweaters. I think they are claustrophobic and prefer the "all natural" look instead of being confined to a sweater for warmth. That being the case, it really hinders outdoors activities during the winter months. Well, it hinders most outdoors activities....Dora has discovered a way around the annoying cold, she has become a patio door hunter. Dora is a hard one to stop when she has her mind set on something....

"Dora honey, you have been there at that door all afternoon, let's go get you a chew bone...come on...."

"Well, you certainly have your sights set on something...what is it girl? "

Dora sees the squirrel she wants desperately to catch. I have news for her, that is one smart squirrel, smarter than average...See that play house? Well, this squirrel does not care for the tall, windy, rocking tree tops. No, sirree, this squirrel has discovered that this playhouse is dry, still, and is the prefect shelter for its home. He/She has a nest in there, and for the second year running...enjoys its house very much. Like I said, one smart squirrel.

And don't think for one minute this squirrel does not know what it is doing....taunting a little helpless dog is all in a days work.

Dora has not figured out that no matter how sly she thinks she is, she will never catch that squirrel. Granted, she has the patience of a saint, and waits and waits and waits.....

(and please pay no attention to the muddy paw prints on the door trim, it was muddy here a few days ago, and well...three pups racing through a small doggie door at the same time does cause a mess sometimes. And well, I just have not gotten around to it yet!)

Dora is fast...just not fast enough. And she comes up short each and every time.

I have to give Dora credit, she is persistent. She always returns to her hunting perch. She might wander down the hall for a drink of water or to see what everyone else is doing, but right back she will go.....always hunting for the one she can not catch.

"I'm sorry Dora, I know you are a good hunter. Don't feel too bad, even the best of hunters come up short sometimes."...ummmm.... no pun intended....really. "I hope your not too upset, at least the sun is warming your belly, it could be worse, it could be snowing."

  1. LOL, Dora is so cute, and so patient. My ChiChi has finally decided she will just exnore the little varmints...course she couldn't catch one, cause they are bigger than her, they'd just drag her to the nest and drop her off...lol..
Here's hoping her persistence pays off.

  3. Oh suzanne - My minipin isn't good in the snow either. Poor thing has no hair... and while her legs are a bit longer than your babies - she would really like to live in Florida! Mostly she waits for me to do laundry these days so she can sit on hot clothes right out of the dryer. She's always done this - but now at 15 she really loves it. By the way - she only has ever liked 2 dogs in her life - one was a Chihuahua who was littler than here...and one a Dachshund named Max who wasnt so much smaller as he is shorter :)

  4. I never thought of dachshunds as hunters. Perhaps she is seeking to protect you from the encroaching squirrel, afraid he'll take over the real house some day. Our little dachapoo, Murphy, used to love to stare out from the back of the couch like a cat, and protect the house from blowing leaves, etc. Now the poor baby is blind and walks into walls. But he still tries to protect from noises.

  5. Oh! Those pesky squirrels! Dora would go crazy at our house as there are about thirty squirrels living on our corner. You have to hand it to her, she is persistent. BTW, I love your blog's new look.

  8. I love Dora!
My kitties are the same way. Or at least Zorro. Ringo has never been outside yet. But poor Zorro can't believe the weather and he misses his outdoors and beautiful garden so much! Snow covered just doesn't make it for many of the little pets does it?

  14. Can't wait for the next chapter - I love a good read!

You said, "These are great...and silly girl...the bird can wear a santa hat, carry a candy cane in her mouth, or hang ornaments from the key...did I really just say that?? LOL"

    - you realize that you've inspired me now, don't you? :)

  15. My dachshunds hated the snow. Both males and they have a little added discomfort in the snow. No need to explain.

It's hard to imagine that they were bred to go after badger in tunnels. Mine were such babies. Totally docile.

  16. If Dora loves to sit and watch the squirrel and doesn't bark at it, I'd say, leave her to it! My Nico would be barking his head off, which can drive a mother crazy....then I have to go and spray him with a little water which he runs from, but then hides to see if he can go back to it. Love Dora! She's adorable!

  17. Our Button is a hunter too, she is on a mission to rid the planet of rodents! She hates[well loves to hate] those CO. chippies & hunts them all day long even in the snow when she is in CO.Button loves the snow! Dogs need a job, ya know!
Doxies were bred for hunting burrowing animals, prairie dogs like squirrels they are all rodents so Dora is just doing her job.........

  18. Dachshunds are definitely hunters! My doxie, Lucy, used to chase the squirrels up a tree and wait all day for them to come back down, only giving up at dinner time. She is almost 15 now, but I think she would still love to hunt if she could see better. BTW she is not claustrophobic ...she wakes me up at night so I can cover her up.

  22. Oh my, how funny! Doxies must 'love' squirrels.Ours goes tearing when we take her outside. always many yards behind them. We don't have a fence so she's on a leash, pulling the whole way...We can't leave her at her 'perch' too long because she barks at them -while they sit there packing their cheeks full of seeds, not a care in the world :)

  23. I thought my doxie was the only one who didn't like to wear sweaters.

Sometimes someone says something really small, and it's like it fits into this empty space in your heart!

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your thoughts here, they really mean a lot to me!
