When Doing The Right Thing Trumps Logic

I told you last week there might be a post about a dachshund this week, and well, I might as well go ahead and share this story.
My brother sent me, my husband and my daughter a text last week with info about a free dachshund. He said the owner needed a good home for the dog. The dog it seemed got the short end of the stick as a result of a major split between a couple and the dog was not being taken care of. First question I asked was it a boy or a girl.

Of course it was a  boy. Now, I really don't have a thing against male dogs...but I really prefer females as a personal choice......at least in the past.

I spoke with the lady about the dog on the phone. Yes, there had been a split between the couple, she took one dog but could not take both. She said the dog was not being taken care of, had lost lots of weight and was not happy at all and she wanted to find him a good home. there goes the tug on the ole heart strings...ahem.

I told her I'd like to come see the dog before I committed to taking him. I explained to her I had three females who were not fixed and of course this guy had not been fixed either. I told her my oldest dog Sophie was just coming out of heat and I needed to wait until that was over before I could bring him home. She said that was not a problem, they would hold him until I could take him, but I still wanted to see him first so I scheduled a time on Saturday to see him.

We met the man at a parking lot (not his home) which, I did not say anything to my husband at the time, but that sent a red flag for me right away. I really wanted to see the dog in the environment in which he had been living.

When the man got out of the car with the dog, I was shocked at what I saw. Not only is this dog the thinnest dog I have ever seen, but his nails were so long, they curled up under his feet and he was covered in fleas. He clearly was not being fed or properly taken care of and that was all it took for the decision to be made.  I told the guy we were taking him right then and there did he have anything he wanted to send from home with the dog. Of course he did not.

Fist thing we did when we got home was put the three girls outside and cut his nails. Next a bath and then the introductions. It is a fair understatement to say that was a fiasco!  My three girls, one thinking they are the queen (Sophie) and the other two thinking they are princesses (Dora and Bailey) were not having any part of some stranger invading their castle.....but as they say, after a bit of time and Sophie reinforcing who was boss...all sorta calmed down.

Dora does not care much for him, but she has taken on the ignoring stance! Bailey, is so docile that she just sorta snarls when she wants to be left alone. Sophie on the other hand, after she was sure he knew who was boss....decided he might not be so bad. And if you don't think I am worn out by keeping these two apart...well, it has been a sight! So far so good....thank goodness, Sophie is almost out of this heat business and once that happens, it will be a lot calmer. Sleeping arrangements for my husband and I have been slightly altered. But at this point it can not be helped! And no, we don't want to kennel him. We feel he needs lots of love and he is already so attached to me it is like he is my second shadow in line behind Bailey.

The photos don't really show how thin he is. In fact, my brother stopped by our house last night and was shocked as well at how thin he was. He even commented that he did not look so bad in the photos I had posted on facebook. He is on a diet of cooked chicken breast and dog food twice a day. He won't eat treats, but I am sure in time he will figure out what those are in due time. He will be going to the vet as soon as I feel he is back on the road to getting a little meat on his bones. He is still very young, just a little over a year.....and he is sooo sweet!!

Sunday, I wanted to put a collar on him and try to get him used to a leash and collar. I only had girly collars the the other dogs had out grown, and I thought he needed something a little more for a big boy!! So I took this princess collar and added some scraps and turned it into this....

I think it is so cute!!! This is the only sewing I got done over the weekend, besides a doggie diaper for Sophie....it was more like must do sewing -  but it had to be done!!!

Look how cute he is in his new collar! We put a leash  him and well and that was like a bucking bronco show at the rodeo, but he will take to that too, in time.

So this little guy is here to stay, he really is a sweet little guy and he minds well, and learned right away what the doggie door is for! He certainly wrapped himself all around my heart rather quickly....go figure!!

I see at least four trips to the vet in the future.....three spays and one neuter. I am sure once that is all taken care of it will be a lot less stressful!! I just really hope this is the last text message I get about  a free dog that needs a good home.

Logically, we were already full at this inn.....but sometimes logic does not come into play. Sammie (Sam) we already love you and know you will love it with us! After all, it would be hard to find a better home than the one you have landed in....after all.....the dogs here RULE!!

  2. He'a a doll and a very lucky little dog! And you're my hero! I hate when people don't take care of their pets! Every living thing deserves food, shelter and love at the very least.

  3. Oh wow! He is adorable and you are so kind to take him in. I would've done the same - I can't say no to animals...but we're still renting and that sucks. I love to hear that people are still out there that do the right thing. I'm sure he will be a very good dog, and a very happy one to be lucky enough to be with you! It makes me so sad when animals are treated badly...it just isn't right. Thanks for the smile today!

  7. I am so glad that he found a wonderful home with ya'll.
We lost our lil' Oscar de la WeenieDoggie, 2 weeks ago Wed. I still rush home from work to let him out and get up and head to his "house" in the mornings to let him outside.
Stories like this make me smile!

  17. Hi, Oh what a beautiful boy he is. What an wonderful gal you are and your hubby is just as great for taking this guy in. I've finally got hubby to understand that we will be getting a new furbaby when we get home for vacation. I know your pack will settle in nicely; I also love the collar cover-too cute!

  18. He looks plenty thin next to the other dogs. If someone let their human children go like that in divorce, someone would be in jail! Suzanne, you are totally awesome for saving Sammie! But, I also get why there was no way you wouldn't!

I love his bandana-collar. It looks very nice on him and reminds me of the cat I rescued in my teens. He strutted around in that collar like he was saying "who you calling alley cat, I have a HOUSE now!" Sammie definitely seems to be happy with you!

  22. Sometimes fate and logic don't always coincide. And those are the best happenings in our life. So glad you were able to take him in and show him what a real dog's life is supposed to be like :)

  23. How sweet! Sam indeed has found a wonderful home! We live on a corner at a stop sign and I think everyone in our State knows that I'm a sucker for abandoned cats as we get one dropped off at the corner at least once per month. I usually find good homes for them, but a really homely looking one and one that needed bottle fed have been adopted by me. I think we may have to move, lol.

  28. From one Doxie love to another....he really is a cutie!
I know pictures don't always show everything, but he doesn't look bad weight wise! I know he is LOVING being with y'all...poor baby!!
I'm so glad you took him. I always worry about where my puppies go to, and if they're alright.
Get him fixed first and you won't have to worry so much about the girls! They can come as time goes by and funds are avialable!
    Blessings!

  34. It's like a Fairy Tale, only the humble PRINCE comes to live with the Queen and two Princesses, instead of the girl always having to find a rich husband.

Sweet story, and he's such a charmer.

  36. Well if Sophie is the Queen, I guess she gets the King...grin. Such a good looking dog. I'm really glad the pictures don't show how thin he is. I don't know why people get animals if they don't want to take care of them. He's soooo lucky to have found a good home.

  39. Oh, I am so happy that your rescued him and brought him to his forever home where he will be loved and spoiled like the girls are!!! I can't understand people sometimes!!! I think that we should have to go thorough a home study and such to have a dog or cat!!! Just because you think they are so cute when a puppy or kitten, the grow up and have lots of training issues that are normal and people need to know how to deal with that instead of just ignoring the pet when it doesn't live up to your expectations!! I am so upset now and am going out to buy a live catch trap tomorrow. My neighbor moved on April 16 back to New York. She had a beautiful long haired white cat that she obtained from our local humane society no kill shelter!! She didn't have to pay for her because she had been there for almost two years and they were just happy that she was going to have a forever home. Well, the neighbor kept the kitty in front of the moving truck while the house was being packed up because of the house being open and people going in and out getting stuff loaded. Well, that evening when she went to leave and get in the truck, Chole jumped out with a leash on and took off running. Why my neighbor put her on a leash at this time is beyond me, the cat wasn't used to it and was upset from being closed up in the truck all day. Well, the neighbor and a few of us hunted for a few hours to find Chole. We never did, the neighbor left around 8pm that night with the cat still out there with a lease attached to her!!!! I put food out every day and almost had her one day and then she took off running. She sleeps in the attic of our garage and gets in there from the outside of our house. I see her at night sometimes from the living room window. So, after not being able to catch her we decided to go and buy a trap, I called the animal collector for our county and if they caught her they would take her to the pound. I don't want that to happen. I just feel so sorry for her. She comes back home to the house in front of us every night to check and see if her master is home. How sad!! Hugs and say a prayer that we will be able to catch her. Thank you for taking Sammy and giving him a home!! I had tears in my eyes while reading this post!
    Hugs,
    Lynn

Sometimes someone says something really small, and it's like it fits into this empty space in your heart!

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your thoughts here, they really mean a lot to me!
